Captain Planet, he's our hero! Gonna take pollution down to zero!
In honor of earth day, my superhero blog is dedicated to the one and only, Captain Planet. Every child who grew up in the '90s knows and loves Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Created by Ted Turner, Captain Planets main goal was to raise environmental awareness with a cool hero and a catchy theme song. This superhero isn't all flowers and bees though, don't get me wrong. Captain Planet fights crime and stops criminals, just like Batman, but in the name of the helpless Earth. While Batman is out protecting humanity, Captain Planet is making sure the earth will still be here for humans to enjoy. And being somewhat of an environmental activist in my own small way, what better hero for a girl to love than one interested in the greater good?
In case you don't know the basic premise of the show, here it is. The earth's impending doom became apparent when Gaia, the spirit of the earth could no longer bear the terrible havoc that humans were wreaking on this fragile planet, and she sends out five magic rings to young people across the globe to fight the continuing destruction of our precious planet. And yes, I do think this show to be a bit on the odd side, but it is a problem that should be addressed and what better audience to brainwash than a bunch of impressionable kids flipping through the channels on a Saturday morning? (Perhaps this is why I am now slightly more aware of the environment than previous generations. Pretty good strategy there Ted.)
Anyways, as I was saying, Gaia sends out these rings to five teenagers from Africa, to whom she gave the power of Earth, from North America, to whom she gave the power of fire (that's odd), from the Soviet Union, she gave the power of wind, from Asia with the power of water, and lastly from South America with the power of heart (yeah this one's kind of random.)
But when these 5 powers combine, they summon the earth's greatest champion and superhero, Captain Planet to fight on the planet's side! Doesn't that make you want to run out and plant a tree while wearing a sweet superhero cape? This guy is so inspiring I can't stand it! Talk about a recycling nazi! This guy has got it all under control and the future of this little planet rests securely in his hands.
