"My only interest in politics was a desire to make government work better. It seemed to me government should allow freedom to work for everyone and not try to use problems as an excuse to replace freedom with more government"
-Jim DeMint
Jim DeMint is a United States senator for the state of South Carolina. He has been the most adamant Senate supporter for standing up against wasteful Congressional spending in an attempt to save the American people billions of dollars. He has been labeled as the "taxpayers greatest ally."
In his book, Saving Freedom, Jim DeMint points out the road that the American government is heading in their policy decisions. And the end of that road, according to DeMint is right on the doorstep of a socialist regime. The government control on private business and personal liberties is slowly tightening.
Socialism is defined as "any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of good." Countries currently practicing Socialism include Denmark, Sweden and Norway. And DeMint argues that America is nipping at their heels. He sites the recent bailouts given to big money companies by the government in order to sustain private business, thus granting the government control in the private sector. Where is democracy or capitalism in that? DeMint argues that the government has gotten a little too big for its britches, so to speak, in recent months, and must be reigned back in. And who does he call to do this brave feat? The American people and the United States Constitution, by which all laws are to be made in accordance with, not in the face of.
Saving Freedom outlines a plan to break big government back into its proper role by 1) reducing the excruciating amount of debt we currently find our country in 2) by fixing Social Security to work for all people and not break the backs of the struggling middle class and 3) provide a tax credit for every family to be able to buy health insurance.
The most recent example of extreme socialism in our government, health care reform. While all Americans agree reform was needed, not all agree that a socialist perspective was the right course of action.
The state's response to this recent government action?
The state's response to this recent government action?
This, DeMint would argue, is one small step in the right direction. Next on the list should be failing social programs such as Welfare. America is the land of the free, so why should my right be limited to make it the land of the equal?
Republican or Democrat. Conservative or Liberal. I think we could all agree that a little less government isn't always a bad thing.
